ABSTRACT

As part of a five-year program (2003-2007), the Conseil Général des Pyrénées-Atlantiques has undertaken the digitization of 850 linear meters of archives kept at the Archives Départementales, materials concerning the Basque Country (i.e., the Western part of the Département), in order to facilitate their diffusion via Intranet or Internet.1 With such a goal in mind, it was decided, as a preliminary step, to digitize and encode the finding aids relating to that material in Encoded Archival Description (EAD). If selection of finding aids for encoding was based on that sole criterion, it was nonetheless decided, for consistency’s sake, to encode these finding aids in their totality, and not just to encode the parts relative to the Basque Country, even if all the documents of a fonds or a series described in the finding aids will not be digitized in the near future.
