ABSTRACT

In Chapter 5 we presented the integrated design process and explained how to carry out and how to manage it step by step. A design might appear excellent on paper, but the real test of its quality will only become apparent when it is implemented. Equally, since the implementation may take many decades to complete (with revisions and unforeseen circumstances having the potential to change the design or to render it obsolete), some aspects of testing have to be carried out by other means, such as modelling. At the time of writing, some aspects of forest ecosystem design, such as predicting timber flows or landscape quality, are better able to be assessed than others, such as habitat provision or water quality protection.
