ABSTRACT

I first met Ted Happold on my return from Cornell in 1968 when I joined Structures 3 at Ove Arup and Partners. Ted immediately dispatched me for ten weeks’ indoctrination at the Arup Graduate Training School. Apart from experiencing the energy he imparted to everyone in Structures 3, I didn’t get to know him properly until he drove me in his ageing but classic Jaguar for a meeting with Frei Otto in 1972. In the following twenty-five years as his partner and friend I have been inspired by his confidence and support and have learned to tackle, often directly with his advice, a wide range of construction projects. I hope I can capture the dynamic of both the range of work he accomplished in his life-its elegance, its technical sophistication-and the great fun we all had in working with him.
