ABSTRACT

The Picturesque Movement started in the second half of the 18th century. It first appeared in representations of landscapes but as the new century beckoned, it started to move towards architecture. The Picturesque Architects were particularly inspired by Canaletto, especially after his move to London. It was exciting to be influenced by such great artists, but any architect wishing to become a Royal Academician actually had to exhibit there and would be competing for space with the topographical artists like Joseph Mallord William Turner.
