ABSTRACT

The issue of sudden death during racket sports, such as squash, has attracted recent attention (Brady et al., 1989; Visser et al., 1987). It is recognised that all forms of exercise lead to some immediate increase in the risk of sudden death (Siscovick, 1990). There remains a suspicion that the hazard may be greater for squash than for other forms of physical activity such as jogging (Shephard, 1991;1992). It is unclear whether this is due to the intensity of the required activity, the extreme competitive nature of the sport, or the type of individuals attracted to this mode of exercise.
