ABSTRACT

Creating a database of a competitive sport and extracting from that database a tactical model of the game is one of the most desirable outcomes of notational analysis. Many coaches seek the template of tactical play at the highest level for preparation and training of elite players, and for developing players who aspire to reach the highest levels within the game. Particular databases, aimed at specific individuals or teams, can also be used to prepare potential opponents for match play. The aim of this work was to utilise computerised notation systems to create, firstly, a structural archetype of the game of squash at the elite level, and then to extend this to a tactical model of the game. The second aim was to develop hand notation systems for use by coaches and players, with the intention of providing not only immediate feedback to the competing players but also an educational tool for those players using the systems.
