ABSTRACT

An understanding of elite tennis strategy on different surfaces provides important feedback within the coaching process. Limited detail can be recalled from the match from direct subjective observation of elite player performance. Video and television equipment support the extraction of detailed objective information from tennis matches (Underwood and McHeath, 1977). Further advances in observation and evaluation of sports performance involve notational analysis which provides systematic objective support for coaching. Hand notation has been applied to tennis (Downey, 1992). More recently, computerised notational analysis has been applied to racket sports (Hughes, 1995) with the advantages of historical databases, automated data analysis and flexible querying.
