ABSTRACT

Despite the fact that the use of notation in the expressive arts to define and describe movement dates back thousands of years, its usefulness as an aid to understanding sports performance has only recently been recognised. The first notational analysis system to be produced for racket sports was that developed by Downey (1973) specifically for use in tennis. This and other early systems notated actions and activities by hand, with significant experience being needed to record data in ‘real time’.
