ABSTRACT

According to the guidelines established by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) in 1995, tennis can be considered an endurance activity where both the skill and the intensity of exercise are highly variable. Many factors have been considered to explain this variability (Reilly, 1990). Among these are the type of match-singles or doubles (Morgans et al., 1987), the gender of the players (Seliger et al., 1973), the surface of the court (Brouns, 1990) and the technical skill of the opponents (Groppel and Roeter, 1992). It is reasonable to suppose that the kind of play that a subject is in the habit of performing, or is forced to choose by the opponent, could also affect the intensity of the exercise.
