Contractors rarely go under without many people knowing it was going to happen. Therefore be prepared. Read the signals. Watch out for the flares. And be prepared to carry on the service by other means. This chapter should help. But be warned; an authority’s own legal advice is essential at all stages in any contract termination. And just as important, legal advice is necessary on taking over any management responsibilities and liabilities: • Keep a constant guard for tell tale signs that the contractor is in difficulty. • Warning signs include an ever-increasing volume of adverse gossip,
wages not being paid on time, creditors to the contractor asking the council for payment.
