ABSTRACT

The deficiencies of today’s post-industrial city reinforce the call for urgent action towards the improvement of the quality of life in the city and of its environmental impact in an ever-increasing number of publications, world conferences and research projects (particularly the WCED’s Brundtland Report, 1987; the CEC’s Green Paper, 1990; the UN’s Earth Summit Agenda 21, 1993). Many of these reports contain sections which discuss the form and structure of a more sustainable city.
