ABSTRACT

The scheme was an experimental project which ingeniously blended Interpretation and planning consultation. A carefully devised travelling exhibition portrayed typical landscapes of the region, illustrating the ways that different management policies might affect their appearance. Media included audio-visuals, specially prepared paintings depicting possible landscape outcomes, conventional twodimensional screen displays, and a floor game-a sort of giant snakesand-ladders. The exhibition, which was well staffed, toured to a number of accessible sites in the region, and the public were invited to take part and comment. The scheme was monitored by a university professor and his team, and modified as it proceeded to take into account what the organisers were learning from the exercise. The public’s reactions and suggestions were recorded, and their opinions fed back to the planners.
