ABSTRACT

Financial overspend is probably one of the greatest risks facing the employer and their consultants. If correct procedures and checks are not put in place during the course of design development then the contractor may also be drawn into the financial problems during the construction stage. Employers should be advised on the potential financial risks that could be encountered and contingency plans should be put in place, Consultants and contractors should also give realistic advice on construction costs and not be deliberately optimistic so as to tempt the employer into a project which may later be regretted. Equally the employer should make sure that there are sufficient funds available before engaging others to work on projects.
