Introduction

The concepts underlying sensory integrative theory and its application to patients with neurologic dysfunction were first proposed in the occupational therapy literature by Ayres during the late 1950's and early 1960's.^1–4 With roots in neurobiology, sensory integrative theory has evolved and expanded during the last several decades to become one of the more developed and sophisticated theoretical frameworks to emerge as an occupational therapy knowledge base.
