ABSTRACT

Most of the integration research in civil engineering has focused on proposing technological solutions to overcome fragmentation in the AEC industry (Howard et al., 1989). Yet there is an equally important aspect critical to the success of such IT solutions. Many non-technological or managerial issues need to be considered by companies as they adopt advanced information technologies. We performed a survey of the literature to summarize these non-technological issues, borrowing many of the ideas from the general field of information management, since not much has been written on the subject specifically for the AEC industry. We group the issues into three main categories: planning, organization and development and management.
