ABSTRACT

Several authors have recently discussed the characteristics of a future construction process where information technology is used extensively both in numerous data processing tasks and for data transfer (Howard et al., 1989; Dupagne, 1991; Sanvido, 1992). The term which has been used for such a state is computer integrated construction (CIC) which is analogous to the computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) concept used in other branches of industry. Some authors place more emphasis on the data exchange aspects of CIC, others focus on developing the overall process, including both construction activities and information processing activities.
