The most difficult question to answer about the whole Twyford Down saga is also the simplest-why did it happen?
Did we end up with a road destroying one of Britain’s most precious landscapes because of a series of innocent but catastrophic mistakes? Because of some hitherto undiscovered conspiracy? Or because the political systems that were meant to protect the environment and produce reasoned and practical solutions failed completely?
