ABSTRACT
Locations that offered the basic requirements of survival, ready access to water, food and shelter were constantly visited by our nomadic forbears and in time, as they learned to till the land, the clearings in the great forest became permanent. The crude cultivation methods of early man were most successful on the lighter, dry soils, which meant that the chalklands of southern England attracted widespread settlement.
