ABSTRACT

For most residents the seminar experience is a very positive part of the initial stage of training. I am not sure that such a favorable response would be found in all training programs. To a considerable extent, this surmise is based on the observation that training programs do not share a universal set of criteria for the selection of resident applicants. In some programs, criteria may not be articulated clearly, and in others the faculty may disagree about which criteria are most important. It also seems apparent that some programs publicly endorse one set of criteria, but rank applicants on the basis of other criteria.
