ABSTRACT
The UK has developed a particular approach to managing and controlling the development process. Whatever our role in the environment, it is essential to understand the nature of this process and the ideas and legislation behind it. How does this compare with the process in other countries? This chapter provides a basic account of the development process in the UK and highlights some of the key similarities in a number of other countries.
