ABSTRACT

Economic analysis of the demand for a commodity normally takes as its starting point the relationship between the quantity demanded, the price of the commodity and the income of the consumers. For leisure commodities, however, the resources available to the consumer are wider than simply his or her income. To enjoy leisure commodities consumers need time, and for some consumers the lack of availability of time is a bigger constraint on leisure consumption than the lack of availability of money. When people are asked in surveys either why they do not participate in sport or why they do not participate more often, the single biggest response is typically lack of time. For this reason we dedicate a whole chapter to the demand for and availability of leisure time.
