ABSTRACT

Quantitative analysis of the game of soccer has been conducted by many researchers (Reep & Benjamin, 1968; Hughes et al., 1988; Pollard et al., 1988; Partridge & Franks, 1989). In order to conduct such analyses numerous computer systems have been developed. These computer systems have been used to collect, store, and analyze large amounts of data from an extensive number of games (Franks et al., 1983; Hughes, 1988). Much of the research in soccer, however, has been conducted on games played at the elite professional level. As yet few data have been collected on other levels of soccer performance (e.g. collegiate, youth etc.), and little is known, therefore, about the generalizability of previous research to these other levels of play.
