ABSTRACT
The importance of the penalty kick in deciding the outcome of a soccer match has been much debated. During the 1990 World Cup finals 4 of the 16 final stage matches were decided by the outcome of a penalty kick. As more games are being decided by a single goal (Hughes, 1990), or by the intervention of a penalty shoot-out, the ability of the goalkeeper in these situations is increasingly important.
