ABSTRACT

Recent theoretical and empirical studies into goal setting have questioned the transferability and applicability of research findings obtained in organisational and industrial settings to the sporting environment (Hall and Byrne, 1988). It has been suggested that teachers and coaches may have prematurely, albeit intuitively, accepted such findings and this may account for the lack of literature concerning the effect of goa setting in the realm of sport, and specifically soccer. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether theory taken from organisational and industrial settings would be applicable in a soccer situation. Fig.1.
