ABSTRACT

The argument in this paper is based on our impressions of schemes we have visited rather than on empirical research. Rather than presenting a definitive account of the schemes, we would like to highlight some of the features which we think are important within community programmes and to encourage responses about how these themes fit in with initiatives in other countries. The themes considered are:

links to the clubs through involvement of players and other staff

use of facilities

development and outreach work

range of activities undertaken

justification and performance criteria
