ABSTRACT

The need to know more about the past, a dislike of unnecessary destruction and a general concern about protecting our heritage linked to tradition, continuity, attitude and other personal interests have to be considered alongside the demands for adequate housing, commerce, retailing, manufacturing, roads, infrastructure and other societal needs. Inevitably, as new buildings, roads and other infrastructure projects are required, conflicts of interest will arise between the needs for new development and the preservation of archaeological remains. It means that if archaeology is to be protected some form of public control needs to be applied to ensure that new buildings are built in the right place with a minimum adverse effect on the archaeological environment.
