ABSTRACT
This chapter seeks to identify the design opporrunities that building in steel offers to architects. It then discusses the functional and economic advantages which can arise from adopting this form of construction, and finally touches on the design approach which is necessary to realize these advantages to their maximum. Other contributors have covered these topics in relation to their subject, sometimes in greater detail: the objective here is to give an overview - a general picture - of the benefits of designing in steel.
