ABSTRACT
With the emergence of new models of personality development in psychoanalysis have come new formulations regarding the nature and genesis of psychopathology. Whereas earlier formulations emphasized the role of conflict between relatively well-developed structures in giving rise to symptom formation, more recent formulations stress the pathology of the structures themselves, understanding them as a consequence of incomplete or arrested development.
