ABSTRACT
Barcelona1 occupies a position of special interest in the history of urban planning on two counts in particular: first because of the extension of the city-the ensanche2-which was planned around 1860 and then carried out with a consistency unusual in such contexts, and secondly on account of its urban core where much of the structure and many of the buildings from earlier development phases have been preserved.
