If one has a belief in the worth of history, simply to record a particular set of events has a value in itself. Each generation has a duty to keep its books in order, and to pass on an account that is as fair and as close to the truth as it can be. This is not just to be fastidious, but to acknowledge that future decisions may be shaped by the way in which one interprets and recalls the past.
