The early “Homosexual Citizen” columns reflected discussions in which Nichols and Clarke had participated in the Washington, DC, Mattachine, as well as in other settings. 1 “Lige and Jack” had a message that was “upbeat, no-nonsense, unapologetic, vibrant, sexy, lib- erated.” 2 Nichols and Clarke became the “most celebrated and recognizable homosexuals in America,” with their readers wondering, “what are they like?” 3
