Nichols returned from Hindman and went through the motions. 1 Life’s rhythms sputtered for a while. He seemed to see Clarke in all things. Nichols’s “constant friend,” Steve Yates, took him to see the new musical The Little Prince. When the Little Prince died, his words were as if Clarke were reaching out to him: “And when your sorrow is comforted (time soothes all sorrow) you will be content that you have known me … . And your friends will be properly astonished to see you laughing as you look up at the sky!” But it would require time, and more, for Nichols.
