ABSTRACT

This chapter will look at friendships and the use of leisure among the young people in our study to discover to what extent the pattern of friendships and leisure activities is affected by the fact of handicap. Since most of the disabled young people in this study were too severely handicapped to be able to get a job in open employment, as we shall show in chapter 7, it is most important to consider how well prepared they appeared to be for an adult life where most of their satisfactions would have to come from things other than work, or at best from unpaid activities.
