ABSTRACT
The purpose of this chapter is to examine the process whereby a free market for wage labour developed in many parts of colonial Africa. The argument is that, during the twentieth century, a fundamental structural change has occurred, involving the development of a labour market, a ‘free’ wage labour force, and a new, capitalist mode of appropriation of surplus labour.
