ABSTRACT

In A Manager's Guide to Sexual Orientation in the Workplace (Powers and Ellis, 1995) my co-editor and I used brief life historiescoming-out stories-of eleven lesbian, gay, bisexual, and heterosexual individuals as the framework for discussing and addressing sexual orientation issues in the workplace (the heterosexuals spoke of "coming out" about having a gay, lesbian, or bisexual relative or friend). The purpose of this chapter is to address the role that narratives and coming-out stories can play in enhancing workplace diversity.
