ABSTRACT

In the changed atmosphere of the 1990s, 1 was fortunate enough to find that community, both in and outside India. With the mainstream print media, cinema, and T V leading the way, giving increased visibility and largely positive coverage to homosexuality and to the rapidly emerging lesbian and gay groups in urban India, the left and the women's movement are finally and reluctantly having to admit some cognizance of the facts of life. My project of a history of same-sex love in India has been whittled down to the still daunting but somewhat more viable project of an anthology of Indian writings on the subject from over 2,000 years, in fourteen languages. This book, & 7 f M < ? Sex Love in India: Readings from Literature , co-edited with Saleem Kidwai, will appear from St. Martin's Press in the spring of 2000.
