ABSTRACT
A robust dialogue with religion had been part of academic discourse for centuries; psychoanalysis-propelled by Freud’s Enlightenment thinkingdisidentified with religion, seeing it as a vestige of human primitivity. For a brief period during his university years, however, Freud did contemplate the viability of theism. This contemplation would have enormous consequences for the future of psychoanalysis.
