ABSTRACT

Certain critics have dealt with issues that go beyond the superficially biographical or musical-analytical. Furthermore, there exist many books and articles devoted primarily or exclusively to the “Wagner reception” during and after the composer’s lifetime, including studies of criticism in particular nations or among groups of likeminded individuals. Although these publications cannot finally be separated from studies of the composer’s life and his works, they constitute a literature of their own.

In the following pages and unless otherwise noted, studies grouped under individual headings or explanatory observations are arranged in alphabetical order according to author, editor, and/or title.
