ABSTRACT
Bill Wilson’s personal confession appears at the beginning of the Big Book, the equivalent of a bible for Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). His confession marks the beginning of one of the most influential confessional movements of our time. The sheer number of relevant responses made in recovery points to a gaping neglect in the practice of honest confession throughout organized religion. Perhaps nowhere else in our society has the private story underlying addictions been so thoroughly explored and transformed.
