ABSTRACT

C hildren progress through myriad changes during adolescence. These changes include becoming more peer focused in determining how to judge whether their behavior is socially acceptable and morally correct. Adolescents constantly compare and contrast their behavior with that of their peers and determine their self-worth based on the feedback they receive. An adolescent who carries the diagnosis of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is using a comparison group of normative peers rather than other peers with ADHD to make self-statements of worth in forming their self-concept. As a function of these differences, adolescents with ADHD can develop a very negative view of themselves, one that is filled with self-deprecation.
