ABSTRACT

Inspired by the above quotation, I explore the connection between the theoretical ideas and the personal value systems of three writers on art therapy: Margaret Naumburg, Edith Kramer, and myself. By doing so I hope to promote among art therapists that “tentativeness” that Deri saw as welcome for the analysts she was addressing. All three of us claim intellectual descent from Freud, but differences among us have shaped the development of art therapy in several different directions.
