ABSTRACT

Referral for a thorough paediatric medical assessment should always be made in cases where children present with repetitive behavioural problems, to rule out possible organic conditions such as Huntington’s chorea, Wilson’s disease and Sydenham’s chorea. Once such conditions have been eliminated, in addition to the assessment protocol presented in Chapter 4, the standardized rating scales and self-report instruments presented in Table 13.5 may be useful in evaluating children who present with tics. Of these, the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale is the most widely used instrument in the field.
