ABSTRACT
The world as we know it is changing. Daily we read of global fi nancial meltdowns, of climate change, and social and ecological disasters. While there have been dramatic improvements in health and welfare and in material standards of living (at least for a part of humanity), in communication and entertainment technology, somehow the world is beginning to look less secure, and the speed of this change is accelerating.
