ABSTRACT

Many instrumental grievers share Russ’s experience. They often find grief counseling, with its strong bias toward affective ventilation, of limited value. In fact, many instrumental grievers may even perceive it as threatening, for their own approaches, strengths, and strategies are discounted. Also, interventive strategies may be designed such that rather than building on their strengths, they ignore them and concentrate instead on addressing what is perceived as their glaring weaknessthe lack of strong affect.
