ABSTRACT

The controversial French cultural theorist, Jean Baudrillard, rumored to have died March 11, 2007, argued in his seminal work “Simulacra and Simulations” that modern society is a reality constructed with imitated scenes based on the symbolism of signs. For Baudrillard (1988), what is real to humans is, in truth, a reproduction of reality. Although that statement is literally true, as external information gathered by our senses is fi ltered and reproduced inside the mind, Baudrillard adds an anti-corporate message in which this modern construct is controlled and propagated by the media. This unprecedented media power is ceded freely by a collectively agreed upon pact between the media and those who are a part of the consumer culture.
