ABSTRACT

One of the enduring themes of psychological theory and research is that human beings are motivated to have control over the events of their lives (Rodin, 1986; White, 1959). Extensive research has demonstrated that perceived control is associated with many positive outcomes, including successful coping with stressful events, making health-improving lifestyle changes, and better performance on tasks (Thompson & Spacapan, 1991).
