ABSTRACT
The main thing for literacy education has long been development of professional teachers-that is, teachers who make informed decisions:
• when assessing student strengths and needs • when responding appropriately to student misunderstandings during
lessons • when designing problem-solving tasks in literacy • when determining how to reteach when things go wrong • when adapting instruction for students whose background and language
may be quite different from the teachers’, and • when developing excited, engaged, and inspired readers.
