ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the academic and clinical (where available) literature on intimate partner violence (IPV) and stalking. It begins by defining terms and explaining the use of domestic violence terminology adopted in this chapter. The traditional approach to treating domestic violence between romantic partners will then be discussed in relation to both the studies on treatment efficacy as well as the literature on risk factors associated with this type of family violence. Five specific topics related to treating IPV will then be discussed: substance use, culture, therapeutic alliance, personality and couples counselling. Ex-partner stalking will then be explored starting with descriptions and definitions of stalking. Four specific topics relating to stalking of ex-partners will then be discussed: attachment, psychopathology, substance abuse and criminality. The chapter concludes with six key points to consider when assigning and treating intimate partner aggression and harassment.
