ABSTRACT

The objective of this chapter is to document the development, implementation and effectiveness phases of a participative intervention project aimed at reducing adverse psychosocial factors and improving mental health of correctional officers (COs), and to pinpoint factors facilitating or hindering this intervention process. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used. Intervention groups composed of various workplace representatives (e.g. correctional officers, management, local unions) identified changes needed to improve the psychosocial work environment. In conclusion, interventions may act in preventing further increases in the prevalence of adverse psychosocial work factors. The three phases of this research address a critical need identified in the literature: that of identifying the factors that facilitate or hinder the intervention process.
