ABSTRACT
To “Third World” women, imperialism has many guises, including the way Western feminist scholarship dominates the distribution of ideas. American and European feminists are active not only in circulating their own culturebound presuppositions about womanhood but also in utilizing children’s literature as a means for doing so. In particular African populations, as in Joëlle Stolz’s The Shadows of Ghadames and Cristina Kessler’s Our Secret, Siri Aang, are being used as a channel for images of oppressed girls and women.
